Part_1_MISTAKES

The mistakes project was based on the idea of learning and trial and error. The investigated mistake for this project was two staircases, which were built at 90 degrees to one another. One staircase was the visible and used staircase, whereas the other staircase was hidden, and only visible through a small door. The hidden staircase leads to nowhere and therefore is an enclosure ending at the top of the stairs. It is a self-sufficient space with light switches, and plugs which makes it possible to be inhabitable. To investigate the interlocking staircases, castings were made of the negative spaces, similar to Rachel Whitereads castings. This explores the idea of how a space is within a space, and also creates a visual representation of how the staircases are interlocked within each other. This idea is also similar to Escher’s drawing of the staircases where there are multiple different spaces created within one space.
