Project based on an interview questions "What is around the corner?" Where the answer was "A place where you go when you want to feed the chicken and pretend you're a lady"
Part_1_MISTAKES
The mistakes project was based on the idea of learning and trial and error. The investigated mistake for this project was two staircases, which were built at 90 degrees to one another. One staircase was the visible and used staircase, whereas the other staircase was hidden, and only visible through a small door. The hidden staircase leads to nowhere and therefore is an enclosure ending at the top of the stairs. It is a self-sufficient space with light switches, and plugs which makes it possible to be inhabitable. To investigate the interlocking staircases, castings were made of the negative spaces, similar to Rachel Whitereads castings. This explores the idea of how a space is within a space, and also creates a visual representation of how the staircases are interlocked within each other. This idea is also similar to Escher’s drawing of the staircases where there are multiple different spaces created within one space.

Part_2_MYTHS
Taking the idea of hidden spaces to Venice, various different spaces were discovered. These spaces ranged in different scales from peaking though a keyhole to tall narrow alleyways, such as Calles Varisco which is only 53 cm wide. Another aspect in Venice, which was investigated, was the idea of confession boxes within a church. Although a confession box is within a big public space (the church), the confession box itself creates a hidden space from the public where all the secrets and myths are revealed. The confession box is also a smaller space within a larger space; so similar to the mistakes project it is a smaller hidden space within a larger space. The found hidden spaces in Venice were then modelled in an exaggerated abstract form to create another space with strong characteristics. Some spaces, such as the tall narrow alleyway created a feeling of being small, whereas another discovered space in Venice where there were two staircases leading into the same space created a feeling of two spaces being in one.Taking the previous idea of hidden spaces, spaces within spaces, and spaces leading into one another, different projects were investigated such as the connecting spaces by Atelier Van Liesholt. The abstracted modelled spaces in Venice were then interconnected with each other in different ways. The idea of the inside of a boat being a hidden space was used as a structural influence. Rather than the structure being on the inside, as is the case in a boat, the structure though was on the outside. The ribbed structure then extended around the models of the hidden spaces, also creating stability within them. The ribbed structure was then extended to the ground resulting in the models being on stilts. This also relates back to Venice, and how it is constructed on piles. The idea of stilts also relates back to the idea of Venice being frequently flooded.

Part_3_LIES
The Lies project is a school building located on Giudecca, Venice. The building is provocating and sited on the edge of the water lines. Investigations from the mistakes and myths projects are used to define the nature of the building. The idea of linking spaces, and hidden spaces along with conditions found in Venice are adapted into the school building. This results in a building where there are multiple entrances into a space, such as the passages in Venice which all appear to lead to one space. This can especially be seen with the multiple passages that lead to St. Marks Square. There are also spaces within spaces such as seating within walls where children can escape to, to have their own personal space. Classrooms are connected through different means of separations, which can convert into different elements such as seating tables etc.The building lies on stilts, which reflects the flooding in Venice, and creates a forest of hidden spaces underneath the building that can be used by the children. The roof results in a landscaped space due to the different spaces on the first floor. This landscape can further be used as a play area overlooking the lagoon. A platform leads over the waters, once again setting a relationship between the water and land. The platform slants into the water so that the rising and falling of the water becomes a special feature and allows for spaces to be hidden or revealed.
